Historic Preservation

The military acquired the property in 1898 and formal establishment of the post began in 1899. The current site contains thirty-seven buildings which were constructed between 1898 and 1947. The majority are considered eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Twenty-three of the thirty-seven buildings are proposed to be rehabilitated and some will be open to the community. The historic parade ground and majestic trees will also be preserved for the enjoyment of Bayside residents.

The Veterans Resource Center

The Veterans Resource Center will be an important component of the Bayside project as it provides opportunities for increased learning and wellness for seniors of all ages and levels of care.

The Center will provide the following:American Flag on Building

  • Veterans Benefits and Subsidy Program will be strongly linked to Veterans Service Organizations and local government agencies in order for Veterans to learn more about benefits availability and how to find and successfully utilize such benefits including housing, healthcare, driver training, and senior aide.
  • Courses that include such topics as introductory computer training and education, Federal and State laws and how they affect seniors, and preparation for senior living and new health care needs.
  • Entrepreneurial Business Development programs will offer a unique opportunity for veteran and non-veteran seniors who wish to open businesses of their own both on- and off-campus.
  • Employment services will also be made available to Bayside residents for skills assessments, job searches, resume preparation, and training opportunities.
